I’m happy to share that the Kansas Data Science Conference was a resounding success, thanks to the incredible efforts of our organizers at Kansas Data Science Consortium. It’s been an honor to collaborate alongside Gryffin Eason, William Duncan, PhD, @Sergio Salinas Monroy, @Fujian Yan, @Jeffrey M. Girard, and Michael Branicky and the entire team, contributing to an event that showcased the best of data science in Kansas
During the conference, I had the privilege of facilitating the Data Science Education Panel, where Lior Shamir, Suzanne Smith, Jïji E. U. Osiobe, @Cecil Christwell, and @Prabhakar Chalise, offered invaluable insights into how data science is taught across various educational institutions. From K-12 to community colleges, and from R1 universities to R2 universities, each setting presented its unique challenges and opportunities. We explored the interdisciplinary nature of data science, spanning fields such as computer science, business, and medicine, enriching our understanding of its diverse applications.
Additionally, I participated in the Women in Data Science session, where I shared our initiative to establish the Women in Data Science Kansas chapter. Alongside Dr. Hande McGinty, I’m proud to serve as an ambassador for this chapter, and we extend a warm welcome to all women interested in joining us. Feel free to reach out to me at safia@ksu.edu for more information.
A special mention goes to our students who showcased their great work through posters, offering insights into data science solutions for partners such as FEMA ( Andrew Mejia, @Vojech Dohnal, @Hunter Phannenstiel), Water Quality (Sai Teja Erukude, Akhil Joshi), Health and Minimum Wage ( Carrie Aponte, Kyle Kohman, Aubriana Gonzalez), Kansas State Housing ( @Dohyun Kim, @Sak Lee), Housing Loans ( Hossein Sholehrasa, @Blake spencer, Mason Noll). Your contributions were truly inspiring!
Thank you to everyone who organized, attended, and supported the conference. Your dedication fuels our mission to advance data science in Kansas, and I’m eagerly looking forward to future events where we can continue this important work together!
