The Performance: Alsamari is a part of the Kuwaiti musical culture that operates in the events and weddings. The name is derived from the Arabic word “Samar,” which means enjoying and chatting with your friend through the night. The Alsamari performance is based on a poem and a dance.
Music: The poem consists of two rhymes, each sung by a group of vocalists. I choose “Ya Soud Fatmeen Elshahar” Song. The selected song was written by Ahmad AlJaber, sung by Muhamad Albolushi.
Dance: The dance movement consists of hand swing and repeated footwork. The dancer starts from a point, swinging in a straight line, then turns back to the start point. Every few forward steps, the dancer swings her hand and face around (left-right).
Decoration: The dancer holds a traditional long scarf called Boknaq over a long dress called Thoob, sometimes covering the head with a golden headband. I decorate my Kibo to look like a dancer (See Figure 1.) from recycled materials, such as a bottle of water, ribbons, scrap paper, fabric, and some nail polish. My sister named it Modiey, a traditional name in Kuwait.
